Police in Ngqayi (Kat Kop) arrested two men in separate incidences, for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Ursula Roelofse, both arrests took place on 17 February 2026.
“During the investigation of a murder case in which a 56-year-old man was killed on 14 February 2026 at Gemiston, new information came to light. Detectives from Ngqayi immediately followed up on the information, which led them to an identified premises. Upon searching the house, the suspect proceeded to his bedroom, retrieved a .38 Special revolver with five live rounds from under his pillow, and handed it over to police. He was unable to provide a valid firearm licence. The 50-year-old suspect was arrested, and the firearm was confiscated,” said Roelofse.
On the same day, in an unrelated incident, members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT), deployed at Nqanqarhu, followed up on information about an unlicensed firearm in the Mcambalala location.
“The information yielded positive results. Upon arrival at the identified homestead, the occupant of the house identified himself to police. During the interview, he confirmed that he was in possession of a firearm and removed it from his waist. The firearm was loaded with a magazine containing nine live rounds. A further search of the house led to the recovery of a box full of ammunition. The suspect was unable to provide a valid licence for the firearm,” said Roelofse.
The 56-year-old suspect was arrested, and the firearm was confiscated. According to Roelofse, both firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they may be linked to other crimes.
Both suspects appeared before the Tlokoeng Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 February 2026, facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
