The search for a missing 7-year-old girl continues as Search and Rescue police members were despatched from Port Shepstone to help in the efforts.
The Grade 2, Xolo-Xolo Primary learner, Lathitha Mtolo went missing last Thursday from the Marikana area of Kokstad and was last seen at her home around 4pm. According to her aunt, Akhona Mtolo, Lathitha was playing with friends, when she returned home to eat before leaving to return to her friends around 4pm.
“She never reached her friend and did not return home. A neighbour claims seeing a young man with red pants carrying the child,” said Akhona. The girl was reported missing and a frantic search ensued with police, local security companies and other authorities, as well as family and community members looking for Lathitha. It is believed that she was abducted.
Since the disappearance of the child numerous pleas have been made on social media for her safe return as well as community and family members gathering at the Kokstad Police Station every day, awaiting any news. Vigils and prayers gatherings have also been taking place ever since her disappearance, praying for her safe return.
On Sunday a large group of people gathered in front of the police station after word was received of the alleged apprehension of a suspect.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mosa Hlaki, said that one 33 year old male suspect is being detained and questioned by police. She also confirmed that Search and Rescue members from Port Shepstone have joined the search efforts.
“The child is still missing. Police are still questioning the suspect. Further developments will be shared in due course,” said Hlaki.
At the time of her disappearance, Lathitha was wearing red and white shorts and blue top. She is the youngest of five siblings living with their mother in Marikana, Kokstad.
The Greater Kokstad Municipality has also made calls for calm and cooperation as investigations continue.
“The GKM is aware of the allegations currently circulating on social media, alleging that a missing child from Kokstad was abducted and body parts used for traditional rituals and witchcraft. The municipality wishes to reassure the community that the matter is currently under investigation by South African Police Service (SAPS). The SAPS have opened an inquiry into the missing person, and the municipality is calling for calm, community cooperation and coordination during active searches. Please allow the police to conduct their work without interference and do report any information to authorities immediately,” said the municipality in a statement.
According to the GKM, Lathitha’s family is constantly updated on the developments regarding investigation and they are receiving support.
“Our thoughts are with them during this profoundly difficult time. Over the weekend the mayor of GKM, Cllr Lwanda Madikizela together with the Whip of Council, Cllr Phumzile Nocanda and Women’s Commission Chairperson, ClIr Zodidi Tshazi visited the family to
offer the much-needed support during these trying times. Further details will be provided by the SAPS using the integrated communication through intergovernmental relations (IGR) structures and community groups as they become available.”
