A cold snap enveloped large parts of South Africa this week bringing with it snow, rain and wind and plummeting temperatures.
Snow started falling in various areas in KZN and the Eastern Cape from Sunday evening, forcing closure of certain roads and passes including the R617 between Swartberg and Underberg, the R405 from Kwabacha to Mandileni, R415 Matatiele to Qachasnek Border post as well as a number of mountain passes including Lootsberg, Penhoek and Barkly.
Two trucks also became trapped on Kingscote (R617) on Monday however received assistance from Berg Protection Services Drakensberg, who provided the drivers with hot meals, coffee and blankets while they remained stuck on the pass.
By Tuesday weather conditions had improved significantly with little added snow in most areas, allowing for roads and passes to be re-opened. Motorists were however urged to remain cautious for the wet and icy road condition accompanied by heavy mist in areas.
