Entries are now open for the 2026 KZN Toyota Kwanalu Young Farmer of the Year competition, recognising the strength and diversity of young farmers across KwaZulu-Natal.
Each year, the competition highlights a new generation of farmers who are not only producing food, but actively shaping the future of agriculture through innovation, sound management and strong community engagement. As the sector continues to navigate a complex and demanding operating environment, the role of young farmers has never been more critical.
“The competition continues to reveal the depth of talent, resilience and forward-thinking within our province. It’s not only about recognising excellence, but about ensuring that the future of agriculture in KwaZulu-Natal remains strong, sustainable and led by capable hands,” says Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque.
Recent winners reflect the calibre of young farmers emerging across the province.
In 2025, Creighton dairy farmer Dale Hutton was recognised for his data-driven, resource-efficient approach, integrating technology and sustainability into his operation.
In 2024, Mooi River Beefmaster cattle and maize farmer Guy English earned the title for his meticulous management, strong focus on biosecurity and ongoing investment in soil health and herd improvement.
In 2023, Lüneberg-based farmer Heiko Gevers was recognised for his precision-driven management style, business discipline and commitment to community upliftment.
These farmers represent a broader shift within the sector – one where careful planning, adaptability and innovation are becoming essential to long-term viability.
The competition is open to Kwanalu members under the age of 40, regardless of commodity, scale or type of farming enterprise. Participants are evaluated not only on production, but on their overall management approach, including planning, implementation and control across key areas such as finance, labour and marketing.
 Importantly, the competition recognises that modern farming success is not defined by size, but by how effectively a business is managed. Whether operating independently or within a partnership, entrants must demonstrate clear decision-making responsibility and active involvement in the core functions of the farming operation.
The provincial winner will go on to represent KwaZulu-Natal at the Toyota SA/Agri SA National Young Farmer of the Year competition, competing against the country’s top young farmers for national honours and the chance to win a brand new Toyota Hilux.
As one of South Africa’s most diverse agricultural regions, KwaZulu-Natal continues to produce a wide range of essential food products for both local and international markets. Competitions such as this play an important role in recognising the individuals who are driving that contribution forward.
