Police are still searching for 7 male detainees after 8 escaped unlawful custody from the Afsondering Police Station cells in Maluti on 04 April 2026. It is unclear how the detainees escape however police say that the circumstances surrounding the incident are forming part of the investigation. One suspect has since been re-arrested.
The 8 men were identified as: Asiphe Yawu; Abraham Gobozi; Kwanele Mzala; Siphelele Mkhulisi; Thabo Nana; Siphelele Nondolo; Anele Ludidi and Sinethemba Mazendala.
A separate case of aiding and abetting was also opened for investigation to determine if the escape was facilitated by others.
The eight escapees were originally in custody for serious offences including murder, rape, crimen injuria, and assault. One of the escapees, Siphelele Mkhulisi (adult male), was rearrested on the morning of 06 April 2026 at approximately 08:00. He was originally in custody for a murder case.
“Acting on intelligence received by a task team member that Mkhulisi was asleep at his aunt’s residence in the Masakala Location (Matatiele), the task team – comprising Vispol, K9, and Detectives tactically approached the premises. The suspect was found still asleep and was arrested without incident,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana.
He cautioned members of the public to not try to apprehend the escapees themselves as they are dangerous criminals.
“Members of the public who may have information that could assist in the investigation or help locate the escapees are urged to contact the investigating team directly: Sergeant Matabane on 076 342 4033 or Constable Mantelefu on 073 109 7962. Alternatively, information can be shared via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS App. All information will be treated confidentially,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana.
