The KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA) hosted a School Outreach Campaign at Leshman Secondary School under Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality under the theme “Children with a future don’t drink and don’t gamble.”
A key highlight of the programme was the handover of 23 school uniforms to 23 underprivileged learners, promoting dignity and supporting access to education. KZNERA extended sincere appreciation to Creighton Liquor Traders for their valued contribution, including the donation of soccer kit in support of the learners.
The school was selected due to serious socio-economic challenges affecting learners and the surrounding community. These include child marriage linked to poverty, alcohol and drug abuse, and instances where alcohol is made available to young people at community functions regardless of age. The area also faces high unemployment and reliance on social grants, which are often insufficient to cover essential school needs. Despite these challenges, the school achieved an impressive 84% matric pass rate in 2025, reflecting resilience and commitment to education.
During the engagement, learners were empowered with information on the risks of underage drinking and gambling, gender-based violence, respectful relationships, and where to seek assistance. KZNERA has the mandate to curb the socio-economic effects of the liquor and gambling industries it regulates, particularly among vulnerable groups such as young people.
KZNERA also acknowledged the support from Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Local Municipality, South African Police Service, the Department of Social Development, and the local Traditional Leadership for their participation and collaboration.
