The Umzimvubu Local Municipality successfully hosted its 13th Annual Agricultural Show over two days from 8th to 9th April 2026, reaffirming more than a decade of commitment to supporting and preserving local agricultural practices.
Held at the KwaBhaca Auction Site, under the theme “Growing together, advancing agriculture through unity, trade and sustainability”, the event brought together emerging and established farmers, local businesses, and community members in celebration of agriculture, innovation, and economic development. Over the course of the two-day show, attendees experienced a rich display of fresh produce, agro-processed goods, and innovative farming practices that reflect the diversity and resilience of the Umzimvubu farming community.
Since its inception in 2013, the Agricultural Show has served as a vital platform for farmers to showcase their products, engage directly with consumers, and establish meaningful connections with buyers, partners, and stakeholders across the agricultural value chain. This year’s event continued that legacy, offering valuable market access opportunities while contributing to local economic growth and food security. The event also brought together a diverse range of key agricultural stakeholders, including government departments, private sector partners, development agencies, financial institutions, and research bodies, all of whom play a critical role in supporting and advancing the sector.
Beyond the exhibitions, the Municipality highlighted its ongoing investment in farmer development through mentorship programmes and skills training initiatives. “These programmes focus on key areas such as business management, improving production efficiency, accessing markets, and meeting industry standards ensuring that local farmers remain competitive and sustainable in a challenging economic environment”, expressed Mr Azola Makanda, the Senior Manager for Local Economic Development.
Despite the absence of livestock exhibitions due to precautionary measures related to the ongoing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak, the show maintained its strong appeal. The Municipality and key stakeholders in this programme implemented the necessary step in line with national biosecurity regulations to safeguard the broader agricultural sector, cars driving in were sanitised and shoes for walk-ins were also sanitised.
The event also spotlighted agro-tourism and the contributions of small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), with visitors exploring a wide variety of locally produced goods. From fresh farm produce to handcrafted products, the show underscored the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit within the community.
Appreciating the platform to showcase her produce was Ms Nontuthuzelo Mbele, who expressed her gratitude, saying, “this Agricultural Show has given us an opportunity to present our products to a wider audience, connect with potential buyers, and learn from other farmers and stakeholders”, she said.
”Standing in for the Mayor Cllr Inga Nodali encouraged continued support for local farmers and entrepreneurs, emphasising the importance of community participation in strengthening Umzimvubu’s growing agro-tourism sector.
The 13th Annual Agricultural Show once again demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and local pride – cementing its role as a cornerstone event in promoting sustainable agriculture and economic opportunity in the Umzimvubu jurisdiction, said Cllr Nodali.
