Convicted rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, has once again failed in a bid to overturn his transfer to the Ebongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre in Kokstad from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison in Pretoria.
Bester made an urgent application the Gauteng High Court last week to declare his transfer unconstitutional, however it was denied due to ‘security risks’. The court said that Bester remained a security risk due his previous escape from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.
Despite claims from Bester’s Gauteng based legal team that the move infringed on his constitutional right to consult adequately, the court said that virtual consultation could be used and that travel to consult in Kokstad was still permitted.
Bester is currently on trial for charges relating to his dramatic escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre including fraud, corruption, violating a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice. His trail is set to start in July at the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein.
