KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has deployed provincial disaster management teams to the Harry Gwala and uMgungundlovu Districts following destructive weekend storms that claimed one life and left several families homeless.
The severe weather, which struck from Friday, 06 February, brought gale-force winds, hail and lightning, causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. In Mzimkhulu (Ward 15), a resident was killed by a lightning strike, while three others were injured in Ward 12 and are receiving medical care. MEC Buthelezi has conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Disaster teams are conducting assessments and coordinating relief. In Impendle (uMgungundlovu District), 12 households were affected, with seven homes destroyed, leaving four families destitute. Food parcels, blankets and hygiene kits are being distributed in partnership with the Department of Social Development. In Harry Gwala, at least 11 homes were damaged by hail, while a rockfall in Ward 1 has blocked road access, which teams are working to clear.
Our priority is the safety and dignity of affected families, said MEC Buthelezi, adding that temporary shelter and building materials are being fast-tracked. Residents are urged to remain cautious as saturated ground increases the risk of further rockfalls and structural collapses.
