A 33-year-old man has been sentenced for a murder which occurred in August 2023 after an investigating officer re-opened the case while probing three other serious criminal cases against the accused.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the Regional Court in KwaBhaca sentenced Vusumzi Mcitwa (33) to 10-year imprisonment for the murder of Sihle Maya, following a tavern altercation in August 2023. He described the investigating officer from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in KwaBhaca as dedicated.
“The sentence comes after the exceptional work ethic that was displayed by the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Ntobeko Potolwana, who reopened a provisionally withdrawn murder docket, and finalised its investigation, while probing three other serious criminal cases against the accused person,” said Nkohli.
According to court records, the regional court heard that on Friday, 4 August 2023, at about 16:45, Mcitwa had been drinking at a local tavern with his friends. Among them, was the victim, Sihle Maya (deceased).
“A heated argument between Mcitwa and Maya led to a deadly altercation. Maya was stabbed in the chest, and he later died in hospital,” said Nkohli.
He added that Mcitwa has abandoned bail in all other pending criminal cases.
SAPS Alfred Nzo District Commissioner, Major General Nompumelelo Majikijela, commended Sergeant Potolwana for exceptional detection and work ethic.
