The recent opening of a new forensic laboratory in Durban marks a significant and positive step forward in strengthening criminal investigations and improving conviction rates across our province.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes this milestone, recognising the leadership and commitment shown by Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson, in delivering this critical facility. This investment reflects a commitment to building a more effective and responsive criminal justice system, one that better serves victims and enhances public safety.
While this development is encouraging, its success will depend on ensuring that the laboratory is fully capacitated and operates at optimal efficiency. To maximise its impact, the DA will continue to support efforts to:
- Fill critical vacancies with skilled forensic analysts
- Strengthen transparency through regular reporting on case backlogs and turnaround times
- Enhance oversight to maintain high standards of efficiency and integrity and;
- Secure ongoing investment in maintenance, technology, and staff development.
As a constructive partner within KZN s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), the DA remains committed to ensuring that this facility delivers real, measurable improvements in the fight against crime – while contributing meaningfully to restoring public confidence in the justice system.
