Two armed robbers were arrested by police in Lusikisiki after members of the community apprehended the suspects and called police.
This according to police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, who says the two male suspects, aged 20 and 23 were arrested on 7 April at around 19h00 after receiving complaints about an armed robbery in the Lungqongqweni area.
“The two male suspects of the same locality, armed with a 9mm pistol, were robbing high school learners residing in the locality. Community members cornered the suspects until their arrest on police arrival. Two cellphones which were robbed at gunpoint from other learners on Friday, 03 April 2026 at about 20h00, were recovered from the two male suspects. The duo was positively linked to the armed robbery that occurred on that particular Friday, 03 April 2026, where two cellphones and cash were robbed,” said Matyolo.
The police members who responded to the complaint were also off duty at the time of the arrest. The 9mm found in possession of the suspects was also illegal with serial numbers removed.
The suspects are set to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrates Court on charges ranging from unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition to possession of stolen/robbed property.
SAPS OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana appreciated the community involvement in the fight against crime demonstrated by the Lungqongqweni community and also commended the off-duty police officials for putting an end to the suspects’ reign of terror.
