The National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, on Friday presided over the official opening of the Pharmacy Facility (the first in the Kokstad management area), the Art and Craft Gallery, and the handover of newly acquired vehicles at Kokstad Medium Correctional Centre.
The opening of these facilities forms part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to strengthen service delivery, enhance offender rehabilitation programmes, and improve operational efficiency across correctional centres. According to the department, the handover of 48 new vehicles marks for use in three management areas, is a significant milestone in strengthening mobility across the KwaZulu-Natal Region, enhancing the Department’s capacity to facilitate court appearances, improve operational efficiency, and support the effective execution of key responsibilities and stakeholder engagements.
“Today marks history in the Department of Correctional Services, where more than two facilities are opened in one day, alongside the handover of 48 fleet vehicles. These initiatives are interconnected as they reflect the value chain of services within the department, from admission of offenders to the provision of healthcare services through our pharmacies, and ensuring effective reintegration support through community corrections,” said National Commissioner Thobakgale.
The Art and Craft Gallery Launch will officially showcase artistic and handcrafted works made by inmates as part of rehabilitation and skills development programmes. The initiative seeks to promote creativity, unlock talent, and demonstrate the Department’s commitment to rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The National Commissioner commended Kokstad Medium B Correctional Centre for transforming an open space into a fully functional Art Gallery showcasing offender arts and crafts, demonstrating the creativity, skills and talents of offenders. Members of the public are encouraged to visit the Art Gallery and support offender rehabilitation efforts by viewing and purchasing the handcrafted items on display.
“The Pharmacy Launch signifies the Department’s commitment to strengthening healthcare services within correctional facilities through improved pharmaceutical access and medication management. The newly handed-over fleet vehicles will enhance service delivery, including the transportation of medication and other essential services, while also contributing to cost-saving measures within the department,” said Thobakgale.
