Umzivumbu Local Municipality celebrated South African Library Week on 26 February 2026 at Umzivumbu Municipality Hall under the theme “Reclaiming knowledge, Empowering Futures”. The South African Library Week highlights the pivotal role libraries play in promoting literacy and enhancing community access to information. The event was graced by dignitaries, including Councillor Mveku (Ward 28), Doctor Mtungwa (Department of Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture), Mrs Maqebhula (Principal Librarian for Umzimvubu libraries) and Mrs Mehlomakhulu (Community Service: Umzimvubu Local Municipality) .34 primary and high schools and 5 participants from community book clubs, including Mini Library for the Blind, participated in various activities that foster literacy and critical thinking skills. Grade 7 learners participated in the words within a word game, and Zanokhanyo Baptist came first, while Ikwezii Lomso Education Centre came second and E. N. Makaula School came third; Grade 10 learners took part in a prepared speech, and Mbodleni S.S.S came first, while Mount Frere Community came second and St. Georges S.S.S came third. In the general knowledge category, Mr Mfaca came first, while Miss Tshabangu came second and Mr Vukuthu came third; in intsomi category, Ngwekazi library came first, while Mabhobho library came second and Mount Ayliff library came third. Winners were awarded with vouchers of varying amounts to reward their efforts. Positions ones in each category will represent Umzimvubu Municipality in the higher-level round. Ndamase (National Education Collaboration trust) and Mr Ndabambi (Ingwe Tvet College), for their time, diligence and invaluable feedback, the participants for their passion and hard work, the organizers for their sterling work and the sponsors for their great support which made the event a success.
