In efforts to enhance livestock production and empower female farmers across the Province, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa, on Thursday, 19 March, undertook an official visit to the Harry Gwala District to launch the Indigenous Goat Programme.
This initiative is designed to strengthen the genetic quality of livestock among communal female farmers, while simultaneously enhancing women’s participation in livestock production and creating sustainable income opportunities in rural communities.
As part of the programme, six female farmers were each supported with 15 does and one billy goat to enhance breeding capacity and improve the productivity of their farming operations. In total, 96 goats were handed over to beneficiaries from the Johannes Phumlani Phungula Local Municipality, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Local Municipality, and Greater Kokstad Local Municipality.
Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Hon. MEC Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said: “By providing indigenous goats, we are giving farmers livestock that is naturally suited to our local conditions. This makes the programme practical, sustainable, and life-changing. Through improved breeding, these women will grow their herds, create income, and actively participate in local markets.”
