The Harry Gwala District Marathon wrapped up on Sunday, 22 March 2026, at Umzimkhulu TVET College in the uMzimkhulu Local Municipality area, with athletes showcasing their endurance and determination. Organized by Genius Athletic Club, the event featured the Full Marathon (42.2 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km), 10km, and 5km fun run, offering breathtaking rural views.
Results: 42.2km: 1st Male: Peter Muidi (R60,000); 1st Female: Rholex Kogo (R60,000); 2nd Male: Jabo Khatoebe (R30,000); 2nd Female: Janet Mbhele (R30,000); 3rd Male: Simon Mwangi (R15,000); 3rd Female: Matlakane Letsie(R15,000).
21.1km: 1st Male: Lungelo Khumalo (R10,000); 1st Female: Winny Biwotto (R10,000); 2nd Male: Tsietsi Sello (R7,000); 2nd Female: Sophy Chepteek Masai (R7,000); 3rd Male: Badboy Toka (R6,000); 3rd Female: Mamosebetse Khojoane (R6,000).
10km: 1st Male: Andile Mntambo (R5,000); 1st Female: Rachel Mbae R5,000); 2nd Male: Andile Mbatha (R3,000); 2nd Female: Onke Khosana (R3,000); 3rd Male: Sizwe Ngobese (R2,000); 3rd Female: Thembeka Mjwara (R2,000).
District Mayor Cllr. Zamo Nxumalo stated that this year, he was fully prepared for this Marathon and is happy to see how the numbers of participants keep growing each year. He said, “I just came from the 10km run, and I will join other leadership for support and to stretch my muscles on the 5km fun walk”.
This shows the mayor s dedication to healthy living, and the emphasis on physical fitness which bears witness to the young generation to follow in his footsteps. The event was a huge success, with participants and spectators praising the organization and scenic route.
