A fire has destroyed between 10 and 12 shops at the Main Street Plaza in Hope Street following a fire which started in the centre of the building around 11pm last night. (11 June 2026)
According to GKM Disaster management, fire fighters were alerted to the fire after a security guard spotted smoke and flames coming from the metal shutters of one of the stores in Hope Street. Quick reaction from firefighters, security companies and authorities saved nearby buildings and the PEP Cell situated in the corner of the building.
According to GKM spokesperson, Zolani Siqwayi, mop up operations are underway this morning: “Our Fire and Rescue teams are still on the scene doing Mop Up. Disaster management is also doing post impact assessment that will enable us to know the extent of damage as well as the possible causes of the fire.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown however fire fighters on scene believe an electrical fault could have caused the blaze.
