On Saturday afternoon, a local motorist watched helplessly as the vehicle in front of her veered dangerously across the road on the N2 towards Kokstad.
The driver got her passenger to film the reckless behaviour, catching a number of near misses and near collisions on the footage. She then shared the footage to the local traffic group, asking for assistance and warning other motorists in the area. Shortly after posting the video to the group, the same driver reported that the reckless driver had collided with a road sign at the Mooidraai turn off just outside Kokstad, and had come to a stop. Fortunately, there were no other vehicles involved.
“I came across the reckless driver near Elandskuil where the vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road. Even when traffic came from the front, he did not move, and the oncoming traffic had to move out of the way. One truck had to veer into the grass to avoid a collision. Near the Pink Church he overtook on a double barrier line, narrowly missing an oncoming truck. Thank goodness for the responsive traffic group which alerted the RTI and fortunately nobody else was involved when he crashed,” said the driver, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Thanks to the post on the group, the RTI were alerted and responded to the scene within minutes. According to the RTI, an African male driver was found in the vehicle with no visible injuries. He was breathalysed and the reading was 2.212 with the legal limit being a mere 0.05. The man was arrested and taken to hospital for observation where blood samples were also taken for further testing. The arresting RTI officer was PI Sosibe.
