Bishop of Kokstad, Thulani Mbuyisa CMM, has been appointed as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Mthatha by Pope Leo XIV.
According to a statement from the Vatican, the announcement was made public by the Apostolic Nuncio to Southern Africa, Archbishop Henryk Jagodzi?ski, during his address to the newly installed Archbishop of Cape Town on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at Grandwest Arena, Goodwood.
In his new role, Bishop Mbuyisa is expected to guide the Diocese of Mthatha while the position remains vacant, ensuring continuity in care and governance until a new bishop is appointed. This new role will be in addition to his current role as Bishop of the Diocese of Kokstad where he has served for four years.
Ixopo born Bishop Mbuyisa was appointed by Pope Francis as the Bishop of the Kokstad Diocese on 6 April 2022, receiving his episcopal ordination on 11 June 2022.
