A baby, estimated to be around 8 months old, was rescued from a storm water drain in Shayamoya by a passerby on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
According to local security company, MC4, they received a call from a concerned community member, claiming they found a child abandoned in a drain. MC4 responded by rushing to the scene.
“On arrival a community member was holding the baby in a blanket. She was left in the drain and soaking wet, but alive. We then proceeded to Usher Memorial Hospital where we handed the baby over,” explained Peter Iellamo of MC4.
According to police spokesperson, Sergeant Mosa Hlaki, a case of child neglect has been opened at the Kokstad SAPS.
“It is alleged that the member of Community saw an 8-month-old infant drowning in a drain and they reported the matter to the police. The child was rescued by members of MC4 security company and they called the ambulance. The child was taken to EG Usher Memorial Hospital where she is receiving medical treatment,” said Hlaki.
