Last Thursday local members of the ANC Kokstad sub-region took to the streets of Kokstad in a peaceful demonstration to highlight social ills affecting the town.
A memorandum was handed over to the Greater Kokstad Municipality before the crowd dispersed peacefully. The memorandum highlighted issues including violence against women and children including the recent cases of missing children in Marikana. The high incidences of drug abuse and drug dealing was also highlighted. The ANC have urged local authorities including SAPS and the judiciary system to increase efforts in addressing the issue.
Another issue raised was undocumented foreign nationals, and while the ANC acknowledge effort made by the municipality thus far to address the issue, increased efforts are urged, especially with regards to granting trading licenses.
Finally the ANC applauded the Greater Kokstad Municipality for achieving a number one rating in KZN and fourth in SA for Financial Stability and Good Governance.
